Cox Science Center & Aquarium

(WEST PALM BEACH, FL) – The featured speaker for the Cox Science Center and Aquarium’s (CSCA) Smarty Party 2026: The Science of Sleep, Dr. Michael Young shared that his Nobel Prize-winning research began with his childhood fascination with a night-blooming flower in Florida. During a “flower side” chat with Smarty Party co-chair Deborah Norville, his inspiration was brought to life, where cascading white florals at the heart of his story set the décor tone for over 500 guests on January 15 at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to the highly anticipated presentation, the evening exceeded its $2.4 million goal and featured a crafted cocktail reception, a seated dinner and curated moments celebrating CSCA’s purpose to open every mind to science.

FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH

Hurricane Season in Florida: Preparing Early for Peace of Mind

Hi everyone. Well, it’s that time of the year again. The snowbirds are gone, the traffic is lighter (maybe) and the heat is on. That also means the dreaded anxiety that comes with hurricane season. It runs from June 1 through November 30, but to my ecollection, my worst fears rise up in August and September. But this year I am going to be positive. Not about the storms, no one wants them, but about getting myself as prepared ahead of time. Unless you are new to Florida, it is no surprise that we have to stock up on canned and non-perishable food, water and medicine, but we don’t have
to wait until the last ominous moment, or drain our bank account because we’re racing
around at the last minute buying

HARRISON’S ESSENTIALS

A Different Kind of Southern Comfor

I traded ocean views for neon signs this month. Imagine rows of gleaming Les Pauls suspended overhead like artwork. Vintage acoustics displayed beneath dramatic lighting. Limited edition customs with finishes so flawless they belong behind glass. I watched seasoned musicians pick up six figure instruments with the kind of reverence normally reserved for rare watches or rare Ferraris. Fortunately, reason returned around the same time I wandered into the acoustic room and heard a man casually play a version of “Tennessee Whiskey” so hauntingly beautiful the entire room stopped moving. Nashville has that effect on people. Friends looked genuinely concerned when I mentioned Tennessee. One asked if I’d suddenly taken up fly fishing. Another wondered if this was some sort of spiritual retreat. Hardly. I was chasing something rarer these days, authenticity with a little swagger. I landed at Nashville International Airport, known simply as BNA, which has absolutely no business being this impressive. BNA somehow feels like an extension of the city itself, warm lighting, soaring wood accented ceilings, live music stages tucked between gates, modern art installations suspended overhead, and enough neon glow reflecting off polished white floors to
remind you exactly where you’ve landed. Massive renovations over the last several years transformed the airport into something closer to a luxury hospitality space than a transportation hub.

RECIPE

Jambalaya with Sausage
and Shrimp

A Louisiana classic bursting with bold Southern flavor, this hearty jambalaya combines smoky andouille sausage, tender shrimp, aromatic vegetables, and perfectly seasoned rice simmered in a rich tomato and clam broth. Every bite delivers a satisfying blend of savory spices, fresh seafood, and comforting textures, making it a delicious one-pot meal that brings the taste of the Gulf Coast straight to your table.

DINING

Rosettas Food Box

Rosetta’s Food Box grew from our love for connecting people with fresh, local food at our family-run market in Jupiter, Florida, where community and good food have always been at the heart of what we do. During COVID-19, when supply chains broke down, we saw how essential our local farmers and artisans truly are. That experience deepened our commitment to supporting them and delivering the freshest local ingredients to families just like ours.

BETWEEN THE LINES

Truth without Trimmings

I’ve been married twice, and neither experience left me eager to try for a third. Both marriages taught me a great deal, mostly about what I don’t want. After my second divorce, I did what everyone insists you should do. I put myself back out there. I dated. I gave it a fair chance. What I found, however, was not exactly encouraging. The men I met often came with issues I no longer have the patience for, excessive drinking, unstable finances, or a level of emotional immaturity that felt more like something to manage than
a partnership to enjoy.

BOOK REVIEW

A Land Remembered.

Patrick D. Smith’s A Land Remembered is a sweeping and unforgettable novel that captures the raw essence of Florida before highways, resorts, and subdivisions, a place of beauty, danger, and unrelenting struggle. Through vivid storytelling and unforgettable characters, Smith transports readers through more than a century of change, from the mid-1800s frontier to the modern age. What results is not only the story of a family, but also of a land and its transformation.
